Inclusive Design Research: Shaping Products and Spaces that Work for You

 presented by

Professor David Feathers
Department of Design and Environmental Analysis
College of Human Ecology at Cornell University

You are warmly invited to join local Cornellians at the Marriott Albany for a fascinating presentation and networking opportunities.

Are products and spaces designed with you in mind? Inclusive design research investigates diverse human capacities to create new products and spaces that work for everyone. Cornell Professor David Feathers and his research team perform inclusive design research on a variety of diverse groups to improve our daily interactions with products and spaces. For example, how can we study persons with severe arthritis as they perform daily activities (such as getting out of bed) improve the home environment for everyone?

Come and learn how Professor Feathers and his research team answer this and other inclusive design questions. You’ll hear how state-of-the-art body scanning technology and other new 3-D measurement tools are being used to inform new product designs for all. You’ll see what these new products might look like and how they improve our daily interactions with the environment.

Cornell Prof. David FeathersBio: Dave Feathers is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Design and Environmental Analysis, Cornell University, with a background in engineering, anthropology, and rehabilitation science. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in human factors/ergonomics in the context of inclusive design. He founded and directs the ARIA Lab (Arthritis Research for Inclusive Access), whose goals are to assess and improve the products and environments we interact with on a day-to-day basis. The ARIA Lab is part of a multi-departmental research and design group called the Cornell SHED (Simulation and Human Engineering in Design), co-founded by Dr. Feathers, along with Dr. Susan Ashdown (Fiber Science and Apparel Design) and Dr. Hedge (Design and Environmental Analysis). The human factors/ergonomics research at ARIA and SHED uses both traditional and new 3D measurement technologies to assess and model human interaction with new designs of the built environment. The ARIA research projects include the investigation of portable multi-touch medical devices, physical access to primary care, and inclusive design for health at home.
